X-DF Dual-Fuel Design
Proven and reliable clean-fuel technology from the dual-fuel pioneers
WinGD is a pioneer in modern dual-fuel technology for two-stroke marine engines, with LNG-fuelled engines in operation since 2016.
The well-established X-DF engines series offers a range of benefits over other dual-fuel engine concepts. Already matured into its second generation, X-DF2.0 technologies iCER and VCR offer a viable and proven step today towards meeting the long-term climate ambitions of ship owners, regulators and society.
As shipping looks to new carbon-neutral and zero-carbon fuels, WinGD has expanded its X-DF portfolio to include high-pressure LNG, ammonia, methanol and ethanol engines, blending the proven dual-fuel expertise with the Diesel Cycle performance and reliability of WinGD’s X-Engines.
NEW X-DF High Pressure for LNG
With first deliveries expected in 2028, X-DF-HP engines provides ultra-large container ships an optimised propulsion solution to help navigate the energy transition.

Designed to outperform, X-DF-HP delivers greater power density for the world’s largest vessels, including ultra large container vessels, very large crude carriers and very large ore carriers.
Available in 82 and 92 bore sizes, it offers superior dual-fuel efficiency and performance with our lowest output. Meeting the power needs of vessels with very high power demand while preparing operators for future fuels and evolving regulations.
X-DF for LNG
Using WinGD’s dual-fuel X-DF engines gives operators flexibility in reducing emissions.

Fossil LNG offers an immediate 15-20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. By blending or replacing fossil LNG with zero or near-zero emissions synthetic or bio-LNG, operators can reduce their emissions further without modification.
The low-cost, highly efficient and reliable fuel injection concept used by WinGD’s low-pressure dual-fuel LNG engines offers several advantages over other dual-fuel engine concepts:
- Simple installation, low-cost auxiliary systems and low power consumption contribute to lower investment and life cycle costs
- Extremely small pilot fuel quantity, below 1% of total heat release
- Engines can be operated on gas down to very low loads
- Low NOx emissions, close to zero SOx emissions and IMO Tier III compliance without exhaust-gas after-treatment
- Particulate matter emissions significantly reduced.
X-DF-A for ammonia
Available for order now, X-DF-A engines enable deep-sea ship owners and operators to harness carbon-free ammonia in their main engines, powering the transition to sustainable shipping.

Safety has been a key priority during the development of engines using ammonia due to the inherent characteristics of the fuel. Supported with Approvals-in-Principle from multiple class societies, X-DF-A delivers the assurance that ship owners and operators need to integrate ammonia-fuelled engines into vessel designs today.
The high-pressure injection concept deployed in X-DF-A engines will be familiar to operators of the WinGD well-established, highly efficient diesel-fuelled X-Engines. Notable features include comparable performance with X-Engines in both ammonia mode and diesel mode, low pilot fuel requirements precisely controlled through common rail injection and NOx Tier III compliance in both modes with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).
Already traded globally as a fertiliser feedstock, refrigerant and industrial chemical, ammonia is set to become a mainstream energy carrier and fuel in the coming decades. Greenhouse gas emissions associated with its production and distribution can be nearly eliminated with the use of renewable electricity, making green ammonia a viable option for meeting societal and corporate climate goals – at the same time minimising owner and charterer exposure to forthcoming carbon pricing.
X-DF-M/E for methanol and ethanol
Available for order now, X-DF-M/E engines enable deep-sea ship owners and operators to harness renewable methanol from biogenic or synthetic sources, powering the transition to sustainable shipping.

WinGD's X-DF-M/E engine offers a flexible fuel pathway to zero or near-zero emissions deploying low-emissions methanol and/or ethanol, with operators able to use either fuel individually or the two as a blend in order to optimise both costs and emission reduction trajectories.
Methanol and ethanol are already widely traded chemicals with established port infrastructure, and are easy to handle onboard without compression or refrigeration. Production capability for low-carbon and renewable methanol and ethanol are being rapidly scaled up, making them viable options for meeting societal and corporate climate goals at the same time minimising owner and charterer exposure to forthcoming carbon pricing.
The high-pressure injection concept deployed will be familiar to operators of WinGD's well-established, highly efficient diesel-fuelled X-Engines. Notable features include comparable performance with X-Engines in both methanol and diesel modes, low pilot fuel requirements precisely controlled through common rail injection, and NOx Tier III compliance in both modes with selective catalytic reduction.
